Terms of Use
These are the terms for using this site. They are written to be read.
Effective 25 July 2026.
What this site is
This is my personal site: essays, notes, and an archive of writing that goes back to 2008. Everything here is my own view, written in my own time. It is not the position of my employer, of any board or organisation I serve, or of any client — past, present, or future.
Nothing here is professional advice for your situation. Reading the site, or writing to me through it, does not create a client, advisory, employment, or confidential relationship.
Using the site
Read anything, link to any page, and quote a short passage with credit and a link back — that is all welcome and no permission is needed. Please do not republish a whole piece without asking, present my writing as your own, or send automated traffic fast enough to degrade the site for other people.
Automated reading is fine, and deliberately so: search engines and AI crawlers are expressly welcome here, as llms.txt and robots.txt say. Indexing and summarising with attribution is the point. Wholesale copying in order to republish is a different thing, and is not.
Who owns what, and the reprints
The writing, design, and code of this site are © 2008–2026 Brian Greenberg, except where credited otherwise.
Some pieces first appeared somewhere else — several on Forbes, one at InfoSec Institute, others in interviews. Each of those carries a line at the top saying where it first ran and when. Those publishers may hold rights in the versions they published, so if you want to reuse one of those pieces, my permission alone may not be enough; check with the original publisher too.
Photographs, logos, and screenshots of other organisations belong to those organisations and appear here for identification and reference, not as a claim on their marks.
The contact form
The contact form reaches my inbox and is protected by an anti-spam check. Use it for real messages; unsolicited sales pitches, list-building, and bulk mail are not welcome and get blocked.
Please do not send confidential, sensitive, or privileged information through it. It arrives as ordinary email. What happens to what you send is on the privacy page.
Links to other sites
I link out constantly — to articles, tools, books, and other people's work. Those sites are not mine, a link is not an endorsement, and what happens there is governed by their terms and their privacy policies.
No warranty
This site is provided as it is. I do not promise it will always be available, that every page will load, or that everything on it is current — a good deal of the archive is deliberately old and describes the technology of its time.
Limits of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, I am not liable for any loss or expense arising out of your use of this site or your reliance on anything published here. This does not limit any liability that cannot be limited by law.
Changes, law, and questions
These terms may change; a new version is posted here with a new effective date, and the current version is the one that applies. They are governed by the laws of the State of Illinois, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules.
Questions go through the contact form.
